Should we pay excessive prices to non contributing parties for products they have "hoarded"?

YES, we pay the asking price or we don't own the product! Downloading is wrong no matter what the circumstances.

NO, These people have NOT contributed to the product. It is OK to download in THESE circumstances because the author & publisher have been remunerated.

a great "get" Marvell. Nice one!

Bottom line with the selling of books at TM is it's a no no. Somewhat difficult for a reseller of books to give an unbiased opinion about that.

In terms of someone buying a $50 book on ebay for $792, I guess I have to ask if it was signed, was it a unique copy in any way, a first run as opposed to 2nd or 3rd print run? Or was the person just ignorant?

Of course a good way to get the price of something up is to publicly buy it from yourself at inflated prices. But that is way too cynical and probably not fair.

I bought from this supplier and I paid $100 each. I have only good things to say about the service etc. A+

It's worth remembering that Richard actually published Pure Effect, so not quite as unbiased as a standard reseller.

I was actually in the market for Pure Effect that particular issue was sold on ebay (US). It was one of those times when DB was on the TV and it was normal for PE to go for 50-150 pounds or equivalent on ebay this and that side of the pond.

It was also not unusual for PE to go for 200 or more and one in the UK went for over 300.

It was at this point I was wondering whether or not to invest in H&Rs stock. They didn't seem to object, but I worried about customs and whether or not it was a short lived price hike.

I guess the guy who bought it just wanted it at lot!

If you look at ebay (UK) sales for October, PE has gone from 60 to 120 pounds and one at 165 with a "hand signed photo".

It's interesting that there are few bidders now, which sort of reflects Richard's assertion that the demand was from outside the community.

I guess all of us who want one have one or consider that even 60 quid is a bit high.

I wonder now about the morals and ethics of reselling sealed copies, given that (or otherwise) that I own my own copy.

2. at the time I wanted one and a friend of mine wanted one. My friend bailed out, I ended up with 2 copies. I sold it recently on ebay in MINT sealed condition for over $300.

Same friend I mentioned in a earlier post who told me he'd downloaded the Torrent.

Interestingly, I paid US$100 + shipping. So I started the Auction off at AU$99.95 with a "buy it now" price of AU$150 (basically what it cost me).

The first bidder only bid $100 so that automatically eliminated the "buy it now" option and it ended up going for over AU$300.
