I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that he mentioned it way back in the days of his Mind Control series. Of course, just because he said it, doesn't make it true.

Interestingly, in one of his early series he did a bit with a 'psychologist' where he'd say a word and then write down what he thought his participant would say in response, getting a pretty good hit rate. When they interviewed the guy afterwards, he said something along the lines of: 'obviously he's using NLP but I've never seen it done to that extent before'. So, although Derren never said he used NLP, his show did have an 'expert' stating that that was what it was.

It easy to see how these rumours about his methods come to being when you view alot of his early work. Especially the really early stuff before Simon Singh gave him a dressing in the Guardian about attributing all of his effects to 'psychology'. I believe it was after that incident that Derren started using his 'magic, misdirection, psychology and showmanship' disclaimer before his shows.

It would be interesting to find out how many magicians state on their websites that they are 'banned from casinos'.

Correct - in the MC casino effects he says he's banned because of his blackjack memory skills.

Simon Scott

If the spectator doesn't engage in the effect,
then the only thing left is the method.

Yeah I remember him mentioning it early on. I recall him saying something similar when he did the one with the guy ate the dog races at the 'win'dow

I don't have a website (or in fact could probably describe myself as a magician without having people laugh at me) but for a while I was (and possibly still am) banned from casinos. All you have to do is train as a croupier, get your Gaming Licence from the Gambling Commision and voila, you are banned from going into casinos except as an employee.

At least thats what my memory tells me, it was over ten years ago since I helped people hand over their money to Ladbrokes on the pretence that they might win just a little bit of it back.

I went to a casino after a gig once, didn't change suits & found that I had two decks of cards in my jacket pocket, one of them gaffed. Now I know that they obviously had different back designs but I wouldn't like to take my chances like that again.

Not so long ago I was talking with a casino manager, he was a friend of a friend, as I wanted his insight into a few gambling themed effects. Discussion soon got on to DB and the alleged blanket ban from casinos.
He thought it was hilarious, stating he could dine out for a year from the publicity he'd get from a visit from the bearded one, as would many other casino owners/managers. In short, he'd give his right arm to have him as a punter for the evening.

This reminds me that I really ought to get in touch with him again. He gave me something of an open invite that should I wish to film the effects he'd be more than happy to use his place as a location, even getting a few beautiful women in for an audience.

Now, the gambling themed effects have been put on the back burner lately, but for the sake of a few beatiful women it wouldn't hurt do film a two-spec OOTW ;)
