To be honest I'm just glad I decided to practice with one rather than presuming it was all good and taking out for performance

the pics I piced up from TescosPhoto online had been additionally cropped by their system, removing the white border around th aroutise of one of the large photos.

This is a shame as I specifically double checked he size of the uploaded file ( a perfect for for 6x4) and then checked agasitn in their cropping system to see that it was all thre. nevertheless it had been cropped further ( albeit slightly) . I can get one usable photo from each sheet, and they tear perfectly well.

If anyone wants to use TescoPhoto I'd suggest you add an additional slight white border to the image to avoid this being a problem for you.

I've also put in a small order at Photobox to see what they come out like.

I found the same thing here in NZ, with those machines. They need a human brain to drive them, I think.

I ended up taking mine to the photo store and getting a human to do them for me. It cost me about 30 cents each.

The instant machines in Boots also crop, even when they do not need to. No usable images at all on the sample I tried. The prints again have the outside white border removed about both of the large photos.

Boots have done the same to me, their machines chop off any unneeded white space (or what the machine thinks is unneeded. If you put a coloured dot in the corners of the template, the machines will crop to the dot and you should be ok.

Mark, have you received pictures for this from Photobox yet? do they do the same cropping?

I only ask as Photobox are powered by Boots photos!

*Edit* Looking at the Photobox website there is a 'Shrink To Fit' option which will apparently stop it removing the extra white space. I'm going to try ordering one with that set on.

The process for Gimp and Photoshop is taught on the DVD. I would imagine that any software package that can open Photoshop files and supports Layers will probably be able to generate the image.

I haven't received my photobox prints yet but there is a "border" tickbox.

i should be getting my 6"x4" matt (border) prints tomorrow and so will let you know how it turns out.

I am also selfishly hoping that all this discussion will put lots of people off this effect

You don't need to use the Photoshop template, there are some sample images that you could easily load in any image programme and use as a template to make your own photos. It'd take a little longer but wouldn't be too difficult.

I use Photobox for all my photo printing (personal and business use) and they are easy to tear, high quality, and if you chose to add a border, it will add an extra border round whatever you put on the print.

I ordered yesterday and they will most likely arrive tomorrow or friday, but I do have a lot of confidence in them. Also, if I refer you, you will get 50 free prints, and so will I, so it works both ways
