i certainly wouldnt class myself as a working pro...but for me, i found it best to work out "what you are" and let that shape the magic you do...
by that i mean, if you suss out the "what skills/powers am i portraying" to perform the effects im doing...then the rest kinda follows...
a very brief example is The Amazing Kreskin, i was watching his dvd the other day, and he sat down, telling the audience that before he started experimenting with the mind, he loved cards...he spent hours working with them...
he produces a pack and says "y'know what, i spent 7 years learning to do this..." he shows a card to the audience, puts it into the deck and quickly flicks his wrist of the hand holding the cards...."look..." the card is back on top...
and the strange thing is, people audibly gasped...some even looked a little shocked...(a real audience too, not an L&L)
for me, its all about the delivery of the material, and making any display of skill or intuition believable...but thats just my thoughts...
it would be nice to be sitting down, having a beer, and someone approaching me with some cards, and said "hey there, im a card-cheat..."
and then just blast into some classic effects...no magic clicking of fingers, but pure displays of skills...
before this turns into a waffle or a rant...i'll shut up...
enjoy your money!
