Theory11 is out!

Postby Jjtee » Sep 1st, '07, 09:36

Well I guess we were all wrong (to a degree) what this was all about! It is now apparent that the site is actually a full working new bona fide magic site with some rather new modern names (and some older) backing the idea. Promoting ideals of a magic community working together, hoping to forward the movement of magic into the bright future (as they say).

The site seems quite Ellusionist esque, but less evil and more "underground". My knowledge of underground magic is slim (as I cannot see much in the dark), but the whole look of the site is quite appealing to my age group.

They have a very long 8 min intro to what theory11 actually stands for, and have released some initial tricks and cards that are exclusive to theory11 (I'm guessing that they're not part of ellusionist then, perhaps the reasoning behind the Dan and Dave split?).

Tricks released so far:

1)
Distortion by Wayne Houchin

This literally looks and plays exactly the same as "cyril's moving pips", available from magic hall. I guess until somebody purchases it we'll never know...but I don't see how this is "new".

2)

Digital Dissolve

By Bj Bueno, shown by Dan White. This looks like a standard coin transpo, but remains interesting to me. Not that big a fan on coins, so it isn't blatently obvious to me how it is done. Looks pretty good actually. Review would be nice!

3)

Panic

By Aaron Fisher. It's a standard disapperaing deck, leaving 4 cards behind. Not sure if it finishes clean, so either gimmicked cards or some sleight is taught. Must say looks nice, but the camera doesn't show the trick all that well...One deck becomes 4 kings.

4)

Witness

"You remove a bag from your pocket. Inside-- sealed-- is a prediction. A card is selected and lost in the deck. The prediction inside the bag turns out to be completely wrong... until the impossible happens. While still sealed inside the bag, the card changes. Never is the bag opened. Everything can be handed out for examination. Don't believe it? Just wait. Teaser video coming soon. Shot on location in Las Vegas, NV."

Not out yet.

5)

Trilogy

We know what that is :D

6)
Torn restored and transformed by Mathieu Bich

Not out yet/

All in all the site looks promising, if a bit ellusionist esque (apparently there are a few digs, explaining how some sites try and fool the buyer, not the tricks fooling spectators etc, watch the intro you'll get what I mean). Very modern, quite appealing to certain aged magicians (Sorry Seige and Mandrake :D!), all we can do is hope and wait for the reviews!

Oh - so it's basically a new on-line magic dealership, and very much a clone of Ellusionist, from what I can see there so far...

...How disappointing

It actually LOOKS like Ellusionist, FEELS like Ellusionist, and features people who've WORKED with Ellusionist.

Perhaps it's a knife in the back?

Oh no Rob it's not just another online magic dealer actually it is the UNDERGROUND MAGIC EPICENTER

I actually thought it was the Elusionist site when I clicked on the link.

The effects look quite good, might check out how they're done on Youtube next week. After all, the b***** E child is sure to inherit some of the less desirable customers from it's parent.

I read through a few articles on the theory 11 forum just now and all the members are at a loss as to how theory 11 is "ground breaking." Well at least they don't censor their forums...

I think their guardian cards are cool.. But i also like black tigers, but it's for their design and not for E.. It's the same with theory 11 i think.. I like their cards but it might be to hyped as an "underground magic epicenter"..

Witness sounds a little familar to be almst like a trick called ImpressX from the 70s. I'll wait and see if it is like the one I have.

having looked at the 2 seconds of video out of all the blurb that sort of shows the trick and added to the fact that he clearly states its presicion engineered coins, Previously known to only a select few, it's now released here for the first time.

I'm inclined to belive that if you have had a sctch and soda set, a hopping half set or alchemist phantasy set then your one of the select few.
the coins which are avalable seperatly, asuming this is how its done, would be a pair of the same type and is a trick iv'e used for some years.

you could clearly show the half and place it at fingertips into the specs hand and have him close it, show the copper as the only coin in your hand and then change it, when they open there hand they will have the copper and it will be the only coin in there hand.
the coins would not be initialy examinable.

Hmm, I thought about requesting 'that' emoticon again, but I think I'll give it a little time and see what happens, well, if anything different happens.

Is every new trick that's released these days "ground breaking"?

All of the tricks they have on there look good i guess, but my god is it hyped up! It seems exactly the same as Ellusionist to me. They say they are only putting on the 'best' tricks or whatever - well that sounds exactly like Ellusionist's mission statement.

It is not 'underground', they have just marketed it to appear so. If you want to buy individual tricks at silly prices then Theory 11 is for you (jsut like Ellusionist was).

Is it my imagination, or is Wayne Houchin's make-up done by the same person that used to do Eddie Izzard's?

I checked out the "theory" site, then the site proper. Whatever sell they were trying to put across in the prospectus was, for me, utterly undermined as soon as they wheeled out their deck. Perhaps I'm being a little harsh, as I suspect releasing special decks is a bit of a no-brainer for websites, but it seems to go against all their "magic before money" posturing.
