I am happy to read his books but I get uncomfortable watching him, so I don't any more. Perhaps I am a sensitive soul but I personally get queasy about anything that seems to be designed to make members of the general public look silly for wider amusement. I never liked Beadle's About either.

That's that first time that I've seen DB compared with Beedle

Well I think it's much better than the last series so far. I've watched both episodes with Mrs Bronz and our housemate and they enjoyed them immensely, I enjoyed the way the first one was essentially mentalism whereas the second (unless I'm stupider than I thought) seemed to be more genuine, if you like.

I know that could be completely wrong but there were identifiable magical methods in the first and the second did play along with what I know of suggestion/hypnosis etc. Anyone else agree or not?

I wasn't overly impressed with the second show in this series but I still enjoiy DB's stuff even if only to see and hear how he handles people. The bit with the time and the collar motif was excellent.

Having made the point about the car crash one in the last series I watched it on 4OD and this time round it was even more significant and distrubing than when broadcast. Possibly because we don't see Derren very much in that show, just his voice on the phone and as narrator.

Anyways, roll on this week's show  !!

I was sad - I watched it on channel 4 and again on the welsh "channel 4" about an hour later - I picked a few things that I didn't spot first time around.

I thought David Tennant was in the May 23rd show - there's something on www.magicweek.co.uk about it.

I've not yet seen ANY 'Trick or Treat' what with being exiled from the UK, but I have heard similar negative/bored 'layperson' reactions to the series as those mentioned in this thread.

So, question: Do you think that perhaps even the awesome Derren and his team have run up against the fact that there is only so much you can do in mentalism?

(Note: That's not a criticism of mentalism as an 'art' or whatever).

not at all - each trick or treat episode is so vastly different, no person can like evry episode! There is something in it for everyone!

And from what I have been thinking, both episodes have a very clever method...

hmmmm...

but that would be speculating now, wouldn't it ;)

There is only so much you can do in mentalism. There are actually relatively few plots, although lots of ways of dressing them up.

Derren has a particular problem, in that his chosen approach rules out quite a few possible presentations/effects, leaving an even smaller pool of things he can do.

I've enjoyed both shows so far, but have a couple of theories about both treats.

I can't say this has been my favourite Derren show, I find the pace too slow for my liking. I guess not seeing the first season didn't prepare me for what this show was about. I must say though that the second show of this season did remind me of when I read Trance Formations by Richard Bandler.

I hope this isn't classed as exposure, but did anybody see the handshake interrupt with the highwire guy, when he was talking to him?

Of course, It's features a lot in Derren's performances, but to the tightrope walker, it would of just felt slightly unnatural, and to somebody who knows nothing of those kind of interruptions and techniques, it's unnoticeable!

Very sleightly unnatural . I believe, and quote me if I am wrong, but the handshake method of hypnosis and usage of suggestion was invented (found) by Milton Erockson.

You may be right - Milton Erikson was also a psychiatrist and psychologist and was a pioneer in Therapeutic Hypnosis and an "authorative" word on inducing trance including experimental work.
