De'ring review by de'vo

Postby SpongeBallSlight-of-hand » Aug 21st, '08, 07:10

The Effect
Mainly ring manipulation. However it does include magical touches, such as taking the ring off a silk and it instantly appearing on your finger. Or tossing the ring VISUALLY in one hand and it appears instantly on the other hand. Basically the effect is you take off a tight ring from your finger, and hold it and it INSTANTLY and VISUALLY flies back onto your finger. It is pretty much angle proof and quite startling.

Cost
$29.95 from Ellusionist or 23,95 Euro's (europe) from handlordz. You can buy it in euro from germany on handlordz or from the US from handlordz site. Additionally, if you order it from de'vo's website you get free access to the de'ring forums, which has a free ring sizer and invaluble information as well as de'vo comes along sometimes on the forum and helps people with advice. He sure has helped me. Otherwise, it costs about 12 USD for forum access. I bought mine from ellusionist so I had to pay 12 bucks for access to the forums, ah well.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
4-5, there is only one "move" but making it convincing takes ALOT of practice. There are 2 additional bonus flourishes too, the gryphon roll and insanity ladder. I'm practicing the insanity ladder and it is also very difficult, for me at least.

Review
This review is about de'ring, by de'vo.

I received the DVD and download in 2006, when this amazing DVD was released. I remember it clearly; E did a promotion and de'vo gave out 5 of his signature rings in pouches for 5 lucky people. If you didn't get the ring you got a black ellusionist wristband. I wore mine for over a year, until it broke.

First let me start off by saying, this DVD is HARD. Very hard. It will take alot of practice on your part but its well worth it. There's no funny moves, switches, etc, its pure skill and manipulation. This DVD is great if you are like me and like flourishes. It's also something different from XCM card flourishes.

De'vo's teaching in the DVD is very clear. He goes in slow motion in parts, and has great close up views (such as with the gryphon roll), and goes over it several times.

The basic ring on is simple but it will take ALOT of practice to get it to look convincible. When the DVD came out I looked for a ring for it. I had a class ring but it was too small. So I got it resized, which it was STILL too small. I got it again resized recently (since I gained alot of weight) and it should work now. You need a properly sized ring for de'ring, it is vital. It can't be too tight or too loose. If it's too tight the ring on won't work, if it's too loose you can have trouble keeping the stone on top always.

De'vo teaches many different manipulatinos you can do with the rings, like spin it in your palm and do a ring on from there, or spin it around in an arc on a flat surface and BAM! It's on your finger. There are also 2 bonuses on the DVD and download. The gryphon roll and insanity ladder.

The gryhpon roll is kind of like a coin roll but for a ring. It's a very fast, visual movement of a ring on the tips of the fingers. Perosnally I find it harder to do than the insanity ladder, alhtough many people have the opposite. De'vo goes over it well, leaves no stone unturned, and even goes slow motion and close up so you can follow along.

The insanity ladder is just that; insane. It's very difficult to do, but once you've mastered it, it can truly amaze and show your skill as a true manipulator/magician.

The production quality on the dvd is superb. The music is even better, you'll want to hear the music over and over again. De'vo should release a music CD from de'ring, it would be great.

The DVD doesn't come with a ring, and one of the challenges from this dvd is finding the perfect ring and perfect fit.

I hope this review has helped someone.
Post any questions you might have.

Overall
Overall, a 4/5. This is a good dvd, that has excellent music to listen to, excellent production value, and if you like manipulation, magic, and flourishes this DVD is for you. With practice, the tight ring is taken off your finger only to appear mysteriously back on it somehow at lightning speed gets reactions. People will respect your skills as a manipulator if you take the time to master the insanity ladder and gryhpon roll. The hardest part is finding a ring that fits. As I said earlier, I had to have my ring sized twice and have yet to get it back yet to see if it works. I bought a band ring and it fits good however it isn't recommended to use a band ring with the basic ring on since it lacks visuals. If you want a dvd with a little bit of manipulation, magic, and like flourishes, you will like this dvd.

I appreciate your contribution. DeRing is a wonderful DVD that truly requires patience and amazing sleight of hand, but nothing impossible to do though.

However, we already have more than one review on the forum. You can see them here:

Hi, I was aware there was already another review but I was hoping another review of a different opinion would help.

I know the Forum always appreciates full reviews from as many folks as possible, to get a good mix of opinion.

It's always a good idea, though, to make sure that any 'follow-up' reviews are posted onto the same thread as the original review, to keep everything in the one place, rather than have fifteen individual reviews for the same product
