I wasnt sure which tattoo thread to reply to - there are a few threads but since this one had the most recent posting i will begin my musings here.
One of the other threads was a " magic tattoo " thread , I thought it was about the magical tattoo's Thai monks do within their beautiful temples.
When i was last in thailand i asked a local who was sporting one of these magical monk tattoos, where did he get it done? he said on his chest

eventually he agreed to take me to the temple to meet the monk whom did it as i had been after one since i started getting tattooed in the late 80s
The temple was a fair distance away but worth the treck, when we arrived the monks gave us refreshments and food and i began talking about my hopes of reciving a mystical tattoo from the monks - they said they would be happpy to give me a tattoo but first they had to know what type of magical tattoo my body and spirit required!!!
The only way to find that out was to earn it ,that meant staying with them at the temple for a few days upto a week doing chores around the temple, helping the locals and crops untill the moment of enlightenment came to the monk on what i shall recive based on my actions & deeds whilst there, i had to leave thailand in 3 days time so sadly never had the time to fufill their requirments for reciving the tattoo.Next time im in that part of the world my first port of call will be the monks temple and i will earn my mystical tattoo from the monks.
A good point was raised in the tattoo threads about branding, some people thought that this was self harming....and they are kinda right...but does anyone consider tattooing a form of self harming?
Some people see it that way as one marks the skin and goes through pain to recived ink under the skin, personally i dont think it is...but hey i have tattoos so yes maybe i would say that
I know of a few self harmers that use to slice their forearms , thighs etc with razor blades, they went for treatment to overcome this terrible illness but felt that what was offered to them through sessions, groups and the like never really helped them - it never filled the void that the self harming could give them in a kinda crazy mixed up kinda way
So to fill that void and perhaps help stop the self harming the idea of giving them a tattoo was suggested - bit of a radical idea perhaps but the idea works , they gave a serial self harmer a tattoo design that really meant something to them over the areas where they was self harming,
guess what ?
It helped them stopped harming themselves as they didnt want to ruin the image on their skin that they had become to like/love and that in turn made them think twice everytime they had the urge to self harm and eventually helped overcome it totally - this person nowadays is nearly covered in tattoos...is it a case of swaping one evil for another or lesser evil ?
Something i have heard in the past from non tattooed people is
" what will they look like when im an old man " my reply is always....Who cares! i will be more bothered about if i can go the toilet by myself, wipe my own backside, have good eyesight, retain my memory in my twighlight years
People forget that tattooing methods, neddles, inks and now laser treatment have come on leaps and bounds since salior jerry and the likes started tattoos back in the day - back then the inks were mostly home made, full of toxic stuff and when in the sunshine most tattoos would react and raise on the skin so much even blind pew could tell you what design you had by feeling them - so pehaps todays tattoos in the decades to come wont look so old and spread like its tattoos laid down by the trail blazers of yesteryear.
As for black ink looking black - modern methods can promise and deliver unlike the old black ink of yesteryears which in fact was dyed with seaweed hence giving that greeny/blue look many old tattoos have now.
In japan they still use this method of making some black inks with seaweed for very traditonal tattooing - if you want greeny/bluey black ink these days it will cost you a small fortune as its seen as a rare and special ink. Well i think i have mused enough for the moment on the tattoo subject - cant help it sorry, its a passion of mine
I have nine tattoos including a japanese half sleeve and even been lucky enough to have one of my tattoos published in national and international tattooing magazines.
90% of them are custom designed - yes you pay alot more for them that way but hey its there forever and the old rule...buy cheap - pay twice come into play ie cover ups - laser removal - regrets etc , so when it comes down to tattoos...DONT SKIMP on costs EVER - its just not worth it
I have a pic of one of my tattoos as my sig picture, I will try and upload a few of them in a bit once i remember my photobucket account details
Ok sorted it now.....
I like tradional style tattoos with a moden twist,Please do not reproduce these tattoo images as some of the designs are custom and copyright, use them for inspiration not plagiarism - Just like magic - be original with your designs.
