Snacks of yesteryear

Postby Replicant » Sep 18th, '08, 18:13

Rather than take Mark's thread waaaay off topic, I decided to start this one. Who has fond memories of their favourite snacks from when they were children? My absolute favourite has to be Banjo chocolate bar - "Banjo, Banjo, the one for me and you..." They don't make 'em like they used to; no, sirree. Banjo disappeared from the shelves in the early eighties, much to my dismay. Image

Oh, yeah. Almost forgot scampi and lemon flavoured Knik Knaks! If anyone knows where I can get these (assuming they're still available) please let me know!

strange - a number of us at work had this very conversation recently and there's a web site devoted to old confectionary.

Remember Cadbury's Bar Six, Milk Tray bar with the lime barrel, mint cracknel?

When I first went to school in the mid-50s, I had 6d a week for sweeties. I could spread it out over the week (4 blackjacks were 1d for instance) or I could blow nearly all of it on a 4d WagonWheel. I always wanted to but never did.

Years later when I was older, I bought a WagonWheel just because I could...... and it was horrible :!:

I would commit acts of genocide in order to get Pacers back.

mmmm Pacers

For those of you too young "Pacers" were a green and white striped indivdually wrapped chew (a bit like chewits) that tasted of spearmint.

Bring back Bazooka Joes chews too. Did they have tattoos in them or a cartoon strip?

I ate so many of these when I was a kid, it's a miracle I still have any teeth left.

Replicant, don't they still do Wham bars? Refreshers defintely are still around.

Not really a blast from the past, but Walkers Red Hot Max were great. Technically off topic, as anyone who considers it a snack need correcting, but Liptonice (sparkling iced lemon tea) was so sorely missed that when abroad part of me secretly hopes that there will be a can of Liptonice lurking in a fridge somewhere.

It brings a nostalgic tear to my eye.

I used to love Texan Bars. Then, when I was 14, I stopped eating sweets for ten years (arguement with my step father, long story). In the intervening years, Texans were discontinued.

About four years ago I found a box in a shop - nostalgia sweets or somesuch. I bought one (it was _tiny_ compared to my memories) and ate it after lunch.

It was, um, horrible.

Never mind...

Deoes anyone remember Pink Panther chocolate bars, they were great and the chocolate was pink too!

Also what about Nerds? Those little tiny round sweets that came in a box? I was banned from having them because I used to drop them on the floor and they'd get stuck in my dog's feet.

I used to love bon bons. I alway's used to remember behind the counters in every little shop they used to have huge jars of all different sweets and you used to order a pounds worth of a couple of them, and the man would be behind the counter tipping the sweets in to his scales to measure out a pounds worth. That is what I remember a proper sweet shop to be like but it seem's like only the hardcore sweet shops sells them now. Memories hey the mid eighties were great for sweet's :D

I remember Bar Six being launched as Cadbury's answer to Kit Kat, the slogan was along the lines of six sections for sixpence (Old money - 2.1/2p in new money)

Personal favourites were Spangles, frozen Jubblies, Blackjacks (4 a penny!) Sherbet Dabs, Nux bars (a bit like Cadbury's PicNic) - sheesh, I'm putting on weight just thinking about them all!
