I was just having a chat with Ecko on MSN and I recalled two times I have been put under in the past so A.J what are your thoughts on these two things?

I have been put under by both a therapist and a stage hypno. The therapist countered my scepticism by using a speed induction. She asked for my hand and took it with one hand whilst with the other she used the heel of her palm to hit my forehead and then started rocking and rolling my head to take me under and deeper and deeper. It worked a charm.

The stage hypno (which was my first time going under and promoted my desire to see a hypnotherapist) was Hugh Lennon when I was at University.

When everyone falls to the left on top of each other is what happened to me also but instead of falling onto the next person I missed them and hit the floor really clunking my head on SU Bar dancefloor but I still stayed under!!! I only started thinking about my head when he brought me back!!

Basically you ask someone to hold a card and repeat I am going to drop this. It doesn't drop so they get this other little voice in their head saying 'it's not going to drop, it's not dropping. He refers to this as subconscious panic - essentially it becomes auto suggestion. The hypnotist then flips his patter to 'you cannot drop it' and they cannot.

Am looking forward to trying that, nice one...

Here is Calofs wording verbatim

Direct - Paper Drop

"If you were just to take a piece of paper and hold it out in front of you (with downward inflection); and look at it;
and hold it out until your arm gets tired; just forget your arm or something.
And look at the piece of paper and I'm going to ask you to repeat silently to yourself the following sentence, "I am going to drop this";
and just keep saying it to yourself as you watch the paper.
over and over to yourself again, "I'm going to drop this", "I'm going to drop this";
and as you continue to say this, I want you to try to drop it, you'll find out you can't.
As you continue to watch the paper find, as you continue to say it, try and drop it your fingers are stuck together you can't drop it.
Try, the more you try, the more difficult it becomes to do; you continue to try.
Now stop saying it to yourself and if you feel like completing the process you can drop it if you want to but you don't have to".

Clearly it is all about iming and there are some clever language patterns in there. However just be The Hypnotist and you can keep it simple.

Think of it like a stiff arm exercise in terms of your timing and intention.

I have four thoughts. 1. You are a great subject. 2. Your therapist has my respect for using a rapid induction. 3. The stage hypnotist loses some for not taking care of health and safety 4. You can have front row seats for my show anytime :)

hahaha, that's brilliant, can anyone say catalepsy? With the right inflection on that you hardly need to say anything else! :twisted:
Thanks Ant, that really made me chuckle.

I received Reality is Plastic earlier today. It really is brilliant! I love the way it just gets stuck right in to the 'good stuff' :). I feel like 'The Hypnotist' already!

I'm currently going through the Stiff Arm exercise of the Set Piece. I hope to start trying some of these techniques out in a few days.

He probably could, yes and he could probably utilise the fact that you know how it's how done to make the whole process easier. eg "and even as you sit there, listening to the sound of my voice, thinking about the hypnotic techniques I may be using, you can relax even deeper into trance"
The fact that you know how he's doing it means you're (probably) going to be thinking about how he's doing it, which just gives him yet another way to pace your experience.

Thanks Zach. I look forward to your feedback after you get stuck in to some practical.

And Jordan...yes, once a good subject always a good subject. I suspect you will be watching the show on video.

Hey again people,

Just an update on my progress of hypnosis. I've been rather busy recently, so I've only just reached the beginning of the inductions section of the book.

I was talking about the book with a friend today and I mentioned the stiff arm exercise - my friend asked me to try it on him and I said something like 'Oh, I probably don't think I'll be able to do that yet'. Anyway, after much encouragement, I decided to try it out. To my surprise, it worked - he couldn't move his arm - he was very impressed! I then tried it on another friend and it worked yet again!

They tried desperately to move their arms and failed. I can't even begin to explain how f****** excellent it felt as I touched a friend's arm and told him that he could move it again (he was then able to move it). That felt so incredibly powerful!

I haven't even got into learning the inductions yet and this book is already worth every penny!

You're lucky it worked. If YOU don't believe it will work, how do you expect them to believe? :twisted:

Remember.. You are THE hypnotist.

I know. When it came to doing it, I did feel like 'The Hypnotist'. Though it's like when I'm performing any magic routine, I feel different and I'm surprisingly more confident than I would be in other situations. When It came to doing it, I believed it would work - and it did, although beforehand, I wasn't as confident.
