I think that should be 62. Even if I'm right, Mr Grue deserves credit for answering this one.

320? Mr. Grue already posted it but that's what I came up with.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Correct :wink: .

So, just to clarify the answer:

there are 320 pages and the number 7 is used 62 times.

Next riddle anyone ???

...... on with the next one:

A rectangle is made up of 10 squares (A - J):

Knowing that the dimensions of the squares are all integers, what is the smallest possible size that the rectangle can be?
Corroborate your answer by giving the dimensions of all 10 squares.

Enjoy :wink: .

I had a look at this when it first went up, and didn't have a clue. I shouldn't try these things in the evening, as I've looked again, and think I have solved it. I don't want to spoil things for bananafish (he might be tempted to pop back when he sees I have posted), so I'll put my answer in very small text.

The rectangle is 105 x 104.

The measurements for the sides of individual squares are as follows:

A = 7
B = 12
C = 16
D = 19
E = 26
F = 28
G = 33
H = 45
I = 44
J = 60

Happy to post the working later.

ah you beat me to it. I will cease...

I got as far as reducing everything to a and b

ie

C=4A-B
D=A+B
E=2A+B
F=4A
G=3A+B
H=3A+2B
I=8A-B
J=12A-2B

I also know the horizontal side is 15A
the vertical side is 20A-3B

Part-Timer ..... you are correct :wink: .

Bananfish, you were soooooo close to the right answer. All you needed to do was to work out that: B = 12A/7, which gives A = 7 and B = 12 (smallest possible integers) .... and the rest all falls into place.

For those that can't read the answer:
