STAR WARS
Ok... I'm not a huge fan of the newer trilogy but I was a child of the 70s and just like Woodstock, you wouldn't understand if you weren't there. Nothing had ever been seen that had the look and feel of this film. Before Star Wars most Sci-Fi (especially space themes) were horribly corny with space ships that obviously hung by a thread. The first film redefined the whole Sci-Fi and in many ways, the movie industry.
Harry Pothead... well, I do think a bit too much hype but I have to say the original Batman movies were guilty of extreme over-hype (especially the George Clooney & Schwarzenegger ones)
I also have to agree that most of today's new releases are simply over-sold and like our last Presidential campaign, they seem to drag on forever. That said, there is an neat advantage given to we consumers... the more hype leading up to a films release and the greater quantity of advertising and PR spots, the worse the film tends to be. It's like the producers know they have a POS and want to get as much up front cash as possible before the public becomes wise to it.
