Simon Cowell: "So this isn't magic then? It's not a trick?"
Regurgitating Man: "No, it's real. I was brought up in an orphanage and used to hide my money this way."

Good boy!!!

I really thought all this time that Stevie Starr DID actually regurgitate those items??

I cant see how the billiard ball could be a trick...someone explain to me..lol..

I refuse to believe that a man can swallow a coin and then swallow subsequent coins which make a "clinking" noise when they hit each other - presumably in his stomach??

And don't get me started on the billiard ball!

Surely the process of "swallowing" an item is not simply a case of item goes in mouth, swallow, item drops into stomach. There is a whole process including the pharynx and the esophagus, and I cannot see how it would be possible for a billiard ball to pass through these stages.

And he used half dollar coins. What's wrong with 10p or £2 coins??

I'm probably showing my ignorance, but to me it's a trick. Those fakirs have a lot to answer for!!

Larger than average crevice in the base of the mouth/jaw, so items can be hidden beneath the tongue.

Essentially the coins would either get stuck in his intestines and even if they did manage to pass through. He'd be coughing up tons of blood.

The pool ball would just get stuck in his throat and he'd choke to death.

But don't forget the premise of his act is that he's a freak of nature. So what would normally happen when something is swallowed has no bearing.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Im taking a guess here, but the only "trick" to it is your perception of where the items end up.

he indicates that the items go down to his intestines. In fact they probably go to the entrance of the stomach, which is a straight line, and are trapped just before they reach the sphincter.

this is more or less the route taken by a sword when swallowed.
( Note, he straightens his body prior to a swallow, just as a sword swallower )

He probably regurgitates the final coin, and holds it in his mouth, then swallows the ball. The coin comes out.. then he regurgitates the ball.
A Trick?

depends on your definition of the word trick.
he is doing exactly what he says hes doing.. just not in the same order.

I thought he was brilliant, no idea how he did what he did but he was great fun to watch. I wasn't conviced about the coins clinking part though, that just seemed a little far fetched.

Considering his stomach wasn't microphoned & his mouth area was I think it's safe to say the coins were not hitting his stomach. I think the comedy timing of the coin clinks could only be achieved in the mouth with the tongue rather than in the stomach. The order the coins came back out was clever although asking 5000 people to shout out a number between one & five you can pretty much go with anything you like.

It's a fascinating act & one which I remember seeing years ago with the goldfish.

From a magic point of view would the act benefit from signed & numbered coins? Or is this opening up 'that can of worms'?

There is a tradition of Carny Geek acts, where one of the doccumented stunts was teh swallowing and reguritating of Live frogs.

Part of the routine would involve having spectators press their ears to teh performers stomach, and listen to the frogs croak.

On the same tack, It was reasonably popular to have someone swallow, and bring back fully grown live rats.

If you read the book "Memoirs of a sword swallower," by Daniel Mannix.....

http://www.amazon.com/Memoirs-Sword-Swa ... 0965046958

there is an account of how this stunt was performed, and a grizly tale of what happens when it goes wrong.

Incidently if your in any way into mentalism, this is a must read book. In part it talks about the old tent shows, and how some of the mediumistic stunts were accomplished.

Utterly facinating stuff.

I've just seen the Youtube link that was posted here and thought it was utterly compelling! I've seen Stevie on other shows and think it's a testament to his years of experience that he gave such a polished performance - he thoroughly deserved his 'Three Yeses'

Oh - and on the subject on whether he really does it or not - who cares? :-) For what it's worth, I don't believe it is real, just an illusion but what the heck?!

Who needs SuBo when we could have our very own SteStar?!

I know the difference between tempting and choosing my fate

I fear SteStar may not make it past the next round. Simon Cowell is known for his dislike of magic and if he suspects trickery he'll not be happy, particularly as SteStar claimed it was all genuine. I'm sure he will have had a team of researchers on the case. Unless of course SteStar is a plant, put on the show to spice it up a bit and provide a change from the hordes of singing children and street dancers.
