Chris B said....

It is of my opinion that most (though, albeit, not all) magicians became magicians because they had some social issues at some point in their life.

You know, Im not sure that this is the case any more. Magic has gone through a bit of a renesance and its seen to be cool.

people out there are genuinly picking up a few tricks on line,
to do down the pub for the lads.

but this isnt much to do with the original question.

You need to look at the history of female magicians, to get a grasp of how things have changed over the years.
Prior to the box Illusion revolution, caused by P.T Selbit , and his ascociates, women in magic pretty much wore what they liked. They didnt need to show off their curves, or shaply ankles.
The box Illusion came, and the Ilusionist found that on the whole, a slim lady could contort herself to fit around blades ect. The alternative, was slim young lads.. who became thin on the ground due to wars... and this is why the assistant became the female.
alas, its taken a long time to get the balance back. But Its getting there.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Oh dear god. To all reading this please note it's nothing to do with me. I brought the MMA topic up because I like combat sports. Not street fighting and thuggery. I'm rather embarrassed

Hoping to keep this on topic.....

Somebody mentioned Derren Brown commented on women in mentalism and the fortune teller route, can anybody tell me where/when he spoke of it? I think that's a very interesting conversation piece

Now you mention mentalism, it has atracted very few ladies.( present company excepted) And it's odd, because mentalism relies on a great deal of logic, and common sense. Something the fairer sex has in abundance, compared to us easy to distract males.

Sure there have been some spectacular double acts , where most of the time, the brain work is done by the lady, but as yet there hasnt been an outstanding female mentalist....ever.
readers, yes.. spirit workers, yes.. bizarists, there are a few.. but no mentalists.
Is this something that will change? I dont know.I would like to think it will...

Interestingly enough this is very much like the situation we once had, regarding lady ventriloquists. They once provided a novelty in the days of the music hall, then they disapeared. then one or two emerged, in particular Bobby Kimber... who turned out to be a man in drag.

obviously we had Terri Rogers. But since her, only Shari Lewis, and Nina Conte hit the scene running.

I am sure that the hobyist ventriloquists are well gender balanced.as is magic, since if you look arond at a convention, there are always a good mix of both men, and women. and not every woman there is an assistant, wife, or partner. Even if they are, they have an interest.

As i said in my other post the history of this subject is well worth looking into.

I couldn't remember where it was myself, so didn't say. As it turned out, all that was needed was a Google search for "Derren Brown" and "fortune teller"!

Aha ;) I just don't see why it's okay for a woman pulling silks from her bosom and I can't pull silks from my trousers!

Depends what you call normal ?

Women normally use their 'womanly' assets in all areas of life.... and of course boys will be boys. Would you like someone to suggest that you never make a flirty comments, or cheeky asides, during your magic performances and you should be performing normally rather than using any male traits.

The role we play as magicians can be an acted-out false role, or we can represent ourselves. We choose that role.
Other magicians may give critical appraisal of the role we choose, but there is no right or wrong role, no right or wrong personality, and gender is a complete irrelevance.

Discussions such as this whole thread have nothing to do with magic, they are to do with the stereotypes we have as a society as a whole.

Sorry but I don't agree that it's perfectly fine for women to use their assets in 'all areas of life'. How is that equality?

What do you mean 'male traits'? You do realise that most women that are entertained by male magicians just think the tricks are cool and that he's clever, they aren't seeing the guy as a sex symbol, in fact a lot of women would probably think the guy is a nerd in real life if he does magic. I can only get by with skill alone, not physical attributes, since when would a woman really care that much about the looks of a magician? It's not like we're Johnny Depp or something. I think it should be the same with roles reversed.

Female magicians are degrading themselves if they rely on their physical appearance RATHER than skill. Yes using a bit of tongue in cheek stuff is fine, especially if they are actually skilled, but I would actually prefer just see a talented lady wearing normal clothes/of 'average' appearance performing good magic than some kind of burlesque style outfitted girl pulling silks from her cleavage. I wanted to see some magic, not soft porn.

No one has to agree with me, but I'm not wrong just if you say so, it's my opinion that I'd just sooner see good magic than yet another facet for a 'sexy' girl to take the limelight away from a more skilled lady (or male) magician.

Well within context. If you turn up at a stripclub and you're entertained by a guy doing mentalism, yeah it might be cool, but that's not why you came. The same can be said the other way around; if you came to see some good magic but what you got was a women basically doing a striptease, yeah it might be cool, but that's not why you came.

It's never a good sign when you go to a stripclub and at one point someone screams 'mentalist!' ;)

Talking of women and mentalism... I have had Katherine Rhodes on a good few times on my variety nights and she's an excellent mentalist who really stunned the audience with excellent presentation so yes, it can be done, but Katherine is a one-off.
