Self Tying Shoelace (as seen on David Blaine)

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

This will stop.

Demitri, your first post was a little on the harsh side, and though I know that we have had problems with this kind of thing in the past I don't think it unreasonable that Black_Stone took offense.

Black_Stone, we have had a number of members join up who question the rules loudly and repeatedly, the posts following your mistake were similar to some of these and for that reason Demitri took issue with you. There are no bullies on this forum but there are a number of members who feel like it is home, and hence find the reccurence of posts which question the rules to be very irritating.

Neither of you have helped the situation, and Cardza, whilst trying to moderate the mood has got caught up in the middle. If there is further comment or bad air on this thread it will vanish.

For the record, I edited the original posts after being informed of the infringment by a member who has not contributed to the thread.

thanks nickj,

i came across this site thru a search
and just got excited at the idea of a
forum where magicians can talk
:D

i was also somewhat excited that i
found a method of executing this trick
and wanted to share and improve it
with fellow magicians.

i diddnt come here to make a stink,
i came here to share ideas.

which i think makes magic more interesting
and rewarding.

Back_stone, just keep in mind that just because this is "magictalk" you can't expect for people to just blurt out how they are done. When you talk to other magicians, that's different because you are face to face and know if the person is a fake or not.

I have come across plenty of people in my 11yrs of magic that have a stripper or svengali deck and talk about how good they are, start mentioning other effects and try to get your opinion on how to do it. But at no time do they mention how they do it, basically they want the info so they can do it. Same thing applies here, you will get people that know the name of an illusion, might know the steps but have NO idea how it's done and start making posts to get info.

I'm sure it was nothing personal against you. Just the fact of the way you came out probably threw a sour note. I know. I'm an admin at another website(has nothing to do with magic, but I will not mention out of respect) and get the same kinds of issues all the time.

Bottom line, don't discuss what is considered taboo.

then tell them... they might turn out to be a big star!

and love getting other people into it.

If they want to know that much, they would be prepared to pay for them.

I have tried to back you up, both on this thread and in a PM.

Let this go, then start afresh.

Yes, the reactions weren't what you expected, but you have been told the reasons why.

People HAVE now apologised.

There are rules for the forum. You will only make yourself look bad if you keep on.

I've had these delivered ready for adding to NUMS, and the 'tussle' at the start of this thread seems unjustified.

I am actually quite shocked at the method, and all you need is provided.

And yes, it CAN be re-set and repeated, and still looks cool. But as with any magic trick, repetition can be an enemy, and your skill and judgement as a performer should tell you when to stop.

Actually, if you look you'll notice that it all happened, for the most part, within an hour or two, which isn't that long at all.

::does it really matter?::

It was a dispute. I am sure that it didn't mean a lot to Black_stone and it didn't mean a lot to me. An online squabble is nothing to get too het up about. It's done, it's over.

On topic, although it is possible to guess at a method, this is one very visual effect. For the price you are getting quite a novel idea (effect) that actually makes some sense as opposed to some other magic (i.e. it isn't just done for no real reason; it serves a purpose) as well as a method, instructions, and the knowledge that you have paid your dues to perform this effect (i.e. bought it). I guess that given the current exchange rate, twenty dollars is just over ten pounds, and to me that's a very good price for something like this.

It looks rubbish when Blaine does it IMHO but if you watch Noblezada it looks like a good trick.

I have been interested in magic since I was just a kid. But I am not a magician so I hope people don't mind me posting here. I just heard about the self tying shoe laces and I googled it and found myself here.
I am notorious for walking around with my shoe untied. I thought it would be really neat if I could learn to do the self tying shoe trick, it might make my fiance and friends laugh.
Anyway even though I am at a rank beginner stage, I ordered the trick, I hope its not beyond my abilities to pull off.
And I think that $19.95 is not too much to risk if I can learn to do it as well as I saw in the video.
Who knows, this may be the beginning of something new for me.
I'd like to learn more tricks too, can anyone recommend a good book or video for a beginner?

Welcome to the forum. What sort of magic interests you more? Card? Coin? Or just general magic?

For cards a good book is The Royal Road to Card Magic by Hugard and Braue. It will teach you all the sleights and moves that you need to start with, as well as some good tricks. This is available in either book or DVD form, run a search for it and you'll find lots of links; practically every magic dealer sells it in some form or another, try one of the ones linked to from this forum.

For coins a good book is Modern Coin Magic by J.B. Bobo. It's kind of the coin version of TRRTCM, again covering sleights and detailing effects. Both books are very well-priced with detailed and concise instructions and helpful and clear illustrations/diagrams. I believe that Modern Coin Magic will be if it is not already coming out on DVD.

For general magic, which covers some of the above and more, try something like The Art of Magic and Sleight of Hand by Nicholas Einhorn or Magician's Magic by Paul Curry. Both feature a history of the art as well as several effects, though the former has more and the latter less.

I think that once you start learning and perfroming magic well, you will be hooked. It truly is a great art form, and one that I hope you enjoy exploring.

Let us know how you get on!

I am interested in card magic, so I'll check out that DVD you mentioned.
I am also interested in any general magic that I can master.

What got me back into my interest in Magic was seeing David Blaine on TV. So I guess that street magic is what is appealing to me right now.

He did a trick where he asked a woman to think of an important person in h er life. She did not even write the name down, just thought of it. In a few moments he says the name, and a taxi drives by with the name written on its side.

If I could learn to do something like that it would be impressive.

Well, the practicalities of such a thing might be a bit hard, but it does remind me of a close-up version of the effect...
