I like the idea of us being close to finding the Higgs Boson and the planet being blown up to make way for an intergalactic bypass mere seconds before we find the answer

OK, I'll be quiet

Quick! To a small cafe in Rickmansworth to await the final wisdom!

If you're worried that the world will end when the LHC begins work, I have some bad news. It's been working since Yesterday morning.

It's on the front page of bbc news online, good enough for me. I don't expect top headlines until they discover something :p

I'm still trying to figure out Pythagoras theorem, so this is confusing me a bit.

Is this Huge Bosom (sp?) thing smaller than a grain of salt? According to Ali G, there's nothing smaller than that.

And when then find it, what exactly will they do with it? I hope they put it somewhere safe in a safe box in Switzerland, because at $10B, it's a seriously expensive grain of salt.

While its topical you might want to use this idea....

I do 'swing-a-ring' based on a Hadron Collider theme.

....Billions of pounds it cost and I can do everything they do for only £1.50 with just this small ring and a shoelace....

... the molecules in the ring collide and this makes a black hole causing the ring to melt right though the sholace...

...the reason they cant find the Higgs Boson particles in Switzerland is because I have stolen it all. I have some here in my hand...

etc.

Ah yes - but they haven't done the "bound to cause a black hole" super-smash yet. Watch this space! End of the world is STILL nigh!

In the exceptionally unlikely event it does all go wrong do you think the scientist that first realises what has happened will be able to think anything more than "Oops."?

Calm yourselves. As I type, collisions with FAR higher energies are happening constantly as cosmic particles smash into the upper atmosphere. the LHC is chicken feed by comparison. The only really special thing about it is being able to do these collisions on demand to capture the results.

Science reporting

Postby jacko » Nov 26th, '09, 13:16

Now come on Tomo - you should know by now that fact, reason and logic have absolutely no place when it comes to any sort of media reporting...

Speaking of sloppy journalism, the headline on the front of the local newspaper says there's "furore" over a lap dancing club application. But the third para says no objections have been raised.
