Cybermen in some sort of Tomb Raider setting, Daleks in WWI, Spitfires engaged in intergalactic warfare, and female vampires. What's not to like? :D

Spitfires, war rooms and Winston Churchill suggest a different war to me...

Oddly enough, Winnie's played by Ian McNeice, who was also in last night's Jonathan Creek.

I like Who for the overall tone, and the main character, rather than because of the science content (which is almost always just some drivel that sounds good - if you're lucky). Doctor Who is arguably 'science fantasy' rather than 'science fiction'. Rod (Twilight Zone) Serling's definiton was, "science fiction makes the implausible possible, while science fantasy makes the impossible plausible."

I think that the biggest problems the new version of Doctor Who faces are that it's become a lot more knowing (but hopefully this will be less of an issue now that RTD has gone) and that the format means it's much harder to do stories that are mysteries or where the slow building of tension is needed. This has left us with a lot of the 'run around shouting, with implausible easy solutions five minutes from the end' plots.

Anyway, I liked Matt Smith in the role, but we'll have to see how the new Doctor's personality develops in the next few stories (Tennant's Doctor was quite violent and cold in his very first story).

By the way, Amy is a kissogram girl, not a stripogram, Mandrake. Keep taking the tablets.

Or stop taking them.

Yes, when I saw the clip of the dalek after Saturday's episode it suggested the trenches (hence WW1) to me. However I think you're right and the whole Spitfires, Winston Churchill and daleks are part of the same episode.

So other interesting points from Saturday's episode:

- The hospital looked very similar to the hospital where the library sent everyone it had "saved".

- The archaeologist from the library episodes showed up in the clips montage at the end.

- In the library episodes, the archaeologist said that "her" doctor could open the doors to the Tardis by clicking his fingers. David Tennant tried this successfully for the first time following that episode. Matt Smith did this without thinking in Saturday's episode.

- The crack in space & time may well be the Doctor's doing. It may hark back to the specials when he saved the life of those astronauts who were supposed to have died - the team leader then committed suicide. Sorry, don't know the episode titles or character names off the top of my head but you know what I mean! Could be that the Doctor changing the outcome of fixed points in time has caused some kind of crack or rift in space/time?

He did, but didn't River Song say that 'her Doctor' looked older than Tennant? I think she said he looked older, not just that he was older, but I might be mis-remembering.

Good thinking. However, it really could be anything from leaving the 'human' copy of himself with Rose, to the Daleks, Davros, the Cybermen, the Master, Rassilon, Omega or pretty much anything else. As Prisoner Zero said silence was coming, it might even be the Vashta Narada (another Moffat creation).

Time will tell.

Mandrake - I feel I really can't (and shouldn't) say anything more!

Firstly the Vashta Narada are all ready here.. That's a given. The doctor told Donna this in the Library.
and i seem to recal that River mentioned that her doctor was Different, not old.

I have a theory on her. Her history is based on the Diary, and her Memories.

I think that we will discover that her memories and her diary, is all the work of the doctor.
He knows her fate... she dies in the library, saving all those people, and defeating teh vasta Narada. As a reward for her actions in this series,
( and as a way for moffat to tie up his loose ends from the Library) he makes the journey a better one for her.

Her story has to end, because Alex Kingston is one busy lady. She is very much in demand.

whoever designed that new 'DW/Tardis' logo is a genius :-) That is very cool indeed....

Finally watched it. At last, a genuinely fanciable assistant! But did anyone else think Vogon constructor fleets?

I stopped reading your post and respecting your opinions at that point.

I've just caught Karen Gillan on This Morning Saturday. It's good to see that she's pleasantly hat stand in real life.

I don't really get all this "I'll miss <x> on telly" any more. Isn't that what a glass of red, iPlayer and a quiet hour before bedtime is for?

Loved tonight's episode.

Nothing groundbreakingly new on the sci-fi front, but very nicely done.

:)

I thought it was a bit rubbish. Too many ideas rushing past. The "smilers" had potential but turned out to be a bit of a non-event. It was a bit of a (dare I say it) "Sylvester McCoy"-type episode!

But next week looks FANTASTIC!!!
