Hung Parliament

Postby Just Steve » May 6th, '10, 10:04

Just a bit curious about this, and wondering if any of you knew the answer.

If we end up with a hung parliament tommorrow, who gets the keys to number 10?

Im being serious by the way.

America chooses an interim government, and oversees the reworking of our electoral system to such a point that it "makes a blind bit of sense".

these are the official rules.......

If no party has an overall majority, the incumbent Prime Minister is entitled to remain in place until a new government is formed. If the party in power believe they can form a government they will have the first opportunity to do so by seeking approval for their programme in the Queen's Speech debate. Other parties will not have the opportunity to attempt to form a government unless and until the incumbent Prime Minister resigns. (See The Cabinet Manual (CM) chapter 6, paragraphs 16-20)

this happened last, in 1974, when we had two general elections.

I meant in it the literal sense by the way, as in if there was a hung parliament between Tories and Lib Dem, does Cameron get the keys or Clegg? I mean i doubt they'd want to share, they all like having two houses at least.

Sorry if i misunderstood your replies.

in that curcumstance, it might depend on which party had the most votes.

The trouble is that because we employ the first past the post system, it may be that the party that received the most votes will not have more MPs than any other single party. It's unlikely that a Conservative PM will get far when the house has a Labour majority.

And for clarity my previous post was a joke.

I wonder if more people would vote if they gave out sweets and "I've voted" stickers at the recorder's table in the polling station?

If they don't I might just make myself one.

One of my mates is voting for Lib Dems, and when i stated a debate on politics with him, i asked him why he trusts them, "Nick Clegg is honest and going to change the country" [sigh]

I think its pretty ironic that Lib Dems have got so much of the limelight from those electoral debates.

My housemate is voting lib dems because they will "legalise weed and get 16 year olds legally in porn videos"

Nice to see he has his priorities straight!
