In a recent impromptu test (conducted over the remains of a KFC Happy Meal in Blackpool!) both items were tested and we discovered that the attractive nature of each seemed to be about the same in terms of pulling power, distance of attraction, weight lifted etc. None of the tests were scientifically conducted in any way so the 'results' are only an indication of what we found at that time.

Also, while we're on the subject, I'm allergic to 'impure' metal on my skin. Are the rings coated with silver/gold?

Two weeks ago I bought a Gold Wizard PK Ring for £25.00 from JBTV. Excellent service & they swapped the ring over for a different size without hassle. However I also suffer the allergy to metal on my skin & despite this ring being gold plated (so I'm assured) & after wearing the ring for 24 hrs I am now suffering in an allergic fashion!

Just wondered if anyone knows of any better quality, ie covered in more gold plate than these. I really want one I can wear 24/7 as your just always ready with one on. JBTV have offered me a credit so there great.

Also are there any other style of PK rings about that are a bit more interesting than the wedding band?

...i got the one from emagictricks for a tenner...

it's a little wide (visually) for my dainty fingers, but you can do some great fake psychometric readings with it some coins (old and new), some envelopes and a sharpie...

it also works well with Osterlind's PK Pen if you dont fancy using what comes with it...no doubt a compass stop would work well with it too...

i wouldnt say its that powerful, but does the job for me...ive not tried stopping a car with it or anything...or a heart for that matter...

Johnny Bravo Unfortunately as with everything different people are allergic to different things. Their is a solution for your allergic reaction with the Wizard PK Ring. If you coat the inside of the ring with clear nail varnish that will help tremendously.

My Business partner has a reaction with the Silver but not with the Gold, and I am ok with both. Try the nail varnish trick, and let me know.

I have not purchased a Pk ring, so I do not know exactly how it is aligned.

That said, If all it is is a neodymium magnet, you can go to scientific suppliers like such (google-ing neodymium magnet ring):

http://www.engconcepts.net/List_Of_Ring_Magnets.asp
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=16
http://www.magnetsource.com/Solutions_Pages/RINGSneo.html

and see if you can find a suitable ring, for no more than 3 or 4 dollars (2 Pounds). Again, I do not know how a PK ring works, so I don't know if you can use any of these. (some companies can do custom sizes and field orientations, but most require a bulk order. IF you are lucky, you can find the one or two that can do a lot of 5 or so).

I assume that when you buy a Pk ring, you also get instructions, so this is not a substitute for buying the trick, just a means to cutomize it to fit the magician.

Thanks Gochos, will buy some tomorrow, do you by chance know how long the nail varnish coat works for or is it just a case of waiting for that familiar itch?

Since those magnets are nickel plated generally, by my reckoning, it should be possible to electro-plate them with something less allergy causing (I imagine copper would be fairly safe for most?).

Maybe someone with a knowledge of workshopping stuff could look into this. If nobody is offering allergy suitable rings right now, it could be a good bet for a business.

just a thought

Edit: Sorry - the point being that custom electoplating could probably vary the thickness of the plate to a point where it doesn't wear through, and is effective at preventing allergic reactions

pk rings

Postby lozey » Apr 26th, '06, 23:59

on the subject of pk rings, i have the silver version but im a little stuck for ideas, since iv never used magnets in my routines. Could anyone give me some pointers please on what effects are possible. I am not asking for methods, just some effects please

Also, i went through a detector thing at a college library that sets off an alarm if uv stolen a book. My pk ring started vibrating!!! very strange lol i hope it doesnt damage them or im going to have to stop wearing it for college!

Ahh, such are the perils of bulletin boards, and editing messages. I'll try again.

I was guessing that the problem with existing rings causing allergy might be that the coating on them that should be a barrier to the nickel is too thin, or wears thin, allowing the underlying nickel tro contact the skin and cause an allergic reaction.

I was suggesting that with a custom manufactured/coated ring, the electroplated coating could be made thicker so as to prevent this happening. If someone were prepared to make these as custom/handmade items, possibly with a choice of coatings/colorings, it could be a good earner.

Steverino the Wizard Pk Rings are nickel coated. It has nothing to do with the thickness of the coating that causes the allergy to happen. Unfortunately its the individual person makeup that is at fault here. Some people have a reaction with nickel, some with gold some with silver. So if you change the coating on the ring, someone else will surface that didn’t have a reaction with the nickel but with the new coating.

Also you cannot coat the Ring with whatever coating you feel like. It has to be tested to see if it adheres to the magnet and also the finish looks clean. Its much more complex than deciding to create the Wizard PK Ring and in two weeks its in the shops. Their is a whole Science behind the design, manufacture and coating of the ring.

People aren't allergic to copper?

Nope. Probably not.

But copper tarnishes in oxygen and turns green in prolonged contact with moisture!
