I'm loving the new series. The kitten thing nearly made me cry, too, but only at the end when I realised Derren was giving her a treat that would improve her life instead of a trick to eff with her little blonde brainbox. He's a divine creature.

I also like how he could have turned it into either a trick, or a treat, depending on what card that he chose :P

Anyone think that if she chose "trick", he would have wagered more money?

In the most recent episode he was using different cards and as she kept hold of the card, I'm pretty sure its not the same old upside down card thing anymore.

It could of been a trick or treat really, but it was an ingenious idea last series.

Knowing what I do about the art of mentalism and doing quite a lot of research on Mr Brown, I now like to judge the show on the reactions of others who are watching the show at the same time.

"Garbage", all 3 of them said (thats my wife and two of our friends)

"Watching someone fall over after looking through a hole in a fence is hardly entertaining and quite embarassing, no matter what teqhnique is being used"

"Does he think we are idiots"

"He's running out of ideas is that fellow"

"I'd rather watch paint dry"

All quotes from my household on said night.

Now personally I think the man can do no wrong, but to laypeople I dont think the show was entertaining enough.

Seeing someone fall over is not entertaining unless you understand the background of whats just happened, which in my opinion the majority of people watching just will not.

I was actually hoping for it to be a trick, not treat, but maybe thats just my sadistic mind working overtime.

Thank you abraxus, my word stumbling tongue twisted attempted explanation of the non use of the trick cards was much better summed up by you!

I believe what Storm1 has written is both typical and representative of the lay persons view and I have to add that when it comes to serious mentalism I'm in the layperson category.

Apart from basic psychology, misdirection etc. that's used in magic 'tricks' I have little interest in taking this to higher levels that mentalism aims to achieve.

There's a lot of Derren's shows that I do enjoy as pure entertainment and mystery but this wasn't one of them.

I've actually been slightly disappointed by the series so far. The first episode seemed to just focus on that guy learning things, where is the fun in that? I enjoyed the episode on friday because of some of the psychology used but it's still lacking in variety.

It does seem to have lost some of it's "fun" value, I still love the show, but it is definately lacking something. Has anyone else noticed it seems a lot darker? Not as in...performance style, but the actual colours. The guy learning stuff seemed to always be in greyish rooms and the women in the dark room blah blah blah. Maybe I just need to phone Sony and get em to send me a new tv.

Well I liked it. But I'd probably watch 3 hours of Derren doing household chores. And be on the edge of my seat.

i didn't mean with the ambigrams, but more along the lines of the fact that he could have turned the whole scenario into a trick, should he have wanted to

I still reckon Derren Brown is the best thing on TV at the moment - as far as I'm concerned, nothing else comes close. Can't wait for my Devil's Picturebook to arrive.... :D

nooooo!

*sigh*

I was on about how at the end rather than going on about how this was a treat, he could have just left it with her emotionally wrecked!
