some tins take the 10p whilst many others don't. There's even an inconsistancy with Coke tins in that not all will take a 10p.

Whilst I agree that it looks better when performed with a 10p, because of the increased size of the coin, the coin that will go into just about every can is a 20p piece, and it's bigger than a 5p piece.

I just bought this, couldn't be simpler....

Postby jittrbug » Feb 10th, '06, 04:25

Hi, I'm a newbie, first post ever on these boards...
I just bought this DVD at a meeting of our local IBM Ring. I had been contemplating buying it from Ellusionist, but I much prefer to support our local magic store, so I did. I have not bought many tricks yet, since I am just getting into the whole magic scene after a life long interest, outside looking in. Anyway, to the point: the trick couldn't be easier. I don't really have any real experience in sleights, but after watching the video and doing TWO dry runs through the moves with a coke can (but WITHOUT a coin in my hands) I performed it for my wife and mother-in-law. It worked fine... a little slow, but successful. After a few dozen more dry runs to get the handling down and to get the speed up, I was able to do it for some people at work and blew them away. For the guys on this thread who are saying they need to practice this for hours, you might want to watch the video a little closer to see EXACTLY where Wayne's hands are going as he demonstrates, do it at a snail's pace about 20-30 times, exactly the same way every time, except to fix whatever is not working. Once you have it right, then keep doing it exactly the same way but speed it up a little at a time. This is exactly the same way a musician would practice a difficult piece. The trick could not be simpler, it almost works itself. I'm not disrespecting this effect at all, it's a dynamite trick and it deserves to be performed well, so whatever it takes for YOU to do it well, is worth the effort. Also, I have learned to do it right handed and left handed so I'm able to compensate for the angles wherever I am when I am performing it. I like to block off the angle on one side of me (with a wall, a bush, some chairs, whatever) when I am doing this to help control the audience's position relative to where I am standing. My favorite thing to do is back myself into a corner so I don't need to worry about people looking over my shoulder. That way, no matter what trick I am doing, I don't need to worry about those angles.
For those who are fishing for details as to how it is done, have you thought about getting a soda and a coin and actually going thru the moves as shown on the demo? It almost explains itself if you try it. I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy the trick.... Wayne Houchin is an amazing technician and deserves to profit from his creations. Even if you do figure out the secret without buying it, the DVD will give you important tips for the handling and for SELLING the effect to your audience. It's also a great lesson to listen to Criss and Wayne talking about their differences in the way they perform it. Yeah, it's a lot of money for one trick, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than some stage props that pack a LOT less impact. Add in the fact that it's totally impromptu and reasonably angle friendly, and you have one helluva trick. I say "Buy it", or better yet, DON'T buy it so I can be the one doing the mindfreaking while you are still fishing on the boards, trying to figure out how it's done... ( :

Hi im new to the forum

Postby Viraen » Feb 15th, '06, 06:38

HI guys im new to this forum, with all this magic chat going around i couldnt help but to register.

I am going to order this trick but first i have to ask you all some questions and i hope u all can help me out.

1. I live in Singapore so is it possible to use local coins to make this trick work exactly the same way in the demo.

2.Is it possible to use local coins to make the coin totally trapped inside the can and unable to be removed at all?

3.Is it possible to use any other cointainer or a bottle to accomplish this amazing effect?

Thank you all for reading this, this seems like a great trick and i want to buy it but just want to make sure before i do

Please reply to me and i will be very greatful for any answers or suggestions!!

1) I should think this trick will allow pretty much any coin currency to work in this trick as most countries have coins of differing sizes.

2) As far as the coins being permenantly stuck inside the can then I'm afraid not but saying this it is still quite hard to get them out sometimes.

3) This trick is specifically for a drinks can although there are seperate tricks you can buy which involve coins in bottles

Hope this helps

thanks alot for your reply greedoniz, i think ill get this effect.

Sorry for the last question what i really meant was does this work on transparent or translucent cans as some of the cans here are transparent...i just thought if this was possible teh trick would be more visual :p

transparent cans???

Postby jittrbug » Feb 16th, '06, 06:34

that's a new one on me! I've never seen a transparent can, but I suppose anything is possible. Are they made out of plastic? How are they constructed? Plastic sides and metal tops and bottoms? Or all plastic? What does the opening at the top look like? Is it a pop-top or a screw off top or what?
To try to answer your question: greedoniz is correct in that the trick is specifically for cans, and that there are several other tricks available for bottles. I don't think it would work well with certain cans (energy drinks like Red Bull, etc.) and I don't imagine that it would work very well with a transparent can. Maybe if it is shaped correctly and there are labels or graphics on certain parts of the can. You'll have to experiment. Once you know the secret of the trick, it will be pretty easy for you to determine if the can is suitable for you to use. Part of the magic of the trick is the rattling of the coin in the can, and if the "can" is made of plastic, the rattling would not be as apparent, especially when it is full. But there are usually enough cans of the proper type around that you should be able to perform the trick wherever you wanted. As far as local coins go, you can probably find something that will work. If not, go for a coin from a different country and make up some story about it, maybe like "it was given to you by a mysterious traveler and you discovered that it had some strange properties, etc., etc."...

I don't think that you'll be disapointed with the effect - maybe a little deflated when you realise how it's done and that you hadn't thought of it first but over all it's still very cunning

If my memory serves me correctly, I think that Boots in the UK used to sell some of their low calorie drinks in a transparent can and I agree that I don't think that the effect would be anywhere near as strong simply because you've given the spec the perfect opportunity to ask to SEE the coin inside of the can instead of hearing it.

I can assure you that it is
The only thing that initially stopped me from buying this trick (apart from the price  ) was the thought that I might not be able to handle all the fancy sleight of hand moves. Well let me put your mind at rest and assure you that this trick is fairly straight forward to perform, there aren't any difficult moves to master - you just need to spend some time practicing it.
Of all the tricks that I do, this trick usually gets the best reaction, usually something along the lines of: "OMFG, how the f*** did u do that?"
Just remember though, practice and make sure you've got the moves down to a fine art before showing it - it only takes 1 slip and the trick is ruined
Enjoy it :D

If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

You will not be disapointed matey. The tirck is easy to perform and made even easier by Criss and Waynes explanation of what to do. Have fun performing this effect...its one of my faves!
