So, I was wandering around the shops yesterday afternoon trying to make my mind up. I finally decided on a budget of £400, but couldn't see myself getting much PS3 for that. Imagine my surprise then when I discovered I could get a PS3 with two games, a couple of controllers and a Blu-Ray film for £370! Granted it was 'only' a 40gb machine but I'm not nearly techie enough to care about the disadvantages.

I got a 60GB PS3 2 sixaxis controllers and 2 games (ridge racer 7 and resistance fall of man) for £399.99 from choices (in Osewstry if you're interested)

Ah yeah the games packages also put me off a bit. I played Resistance: Fall of Man on a mate's PS3 and didn't care for it much. I managed to get Sega Rally and Call of Duty 3 with mine, plus I got Skate today so I've got plenty to be going on with for a while I think.

i can't believe there's been mention of "hardcore gamers" in this thread, but not a thing about pc games.

omgz teh pc roxx0rz teh xbox n ps3 u nubb3r5

my 2p translated as
goodness me, pc gaming is fun too.

However, since pcs are seemingly not in the running, xbox has to win my vote as the orange box is not available on the ps3.

If that doesn't make you want an Xbox then nothing will!

yup, been playing the beta for a month or 2 now, its one crazy game and the animations are first class!

And as for half-life 2:episode 2.....omgzwtfinsane!!!!!!!!

i have been very impressed with HL so far all the way from HL1, I love the story and gameplay is great...episode 2 has totally blown me away.

For those nerdy enough to care, episode 2 and team fortress 2 use version 2 of the source engine which has better hdri lighting support and also directx 10!! sadly the 360 came out without dx10 and there are no plans to update it. Directx is what does all the extra pretty eye candy, explosions and blurs etc and it just got better!

I actually just aimed this thread at consoles, coz computers which can play to the 360 standard or better are normally out of quite a few peoples price range.

Don't get me wrong i love PC gaming, and you can get sum insanely hardcore games for that which consoles just couldn't handle as well - Crysis for example.

I don't understand why some people complain about the size and weight of the PS3. Do they play games while holding the console under their arm or something?

HD is hardly a gimmick, it creates a much more intense playing experience, especially with games like Gears of War, and Halo.

Gabe Newell (creator of Half Life etc...) was quoted as saying "the PS3 is a waste of everyones time".
Everyones entitled to an opinion but when it comes to games and the gaming industry I'd bet his opinion counts for more than most peoples.

I wouldn't rate a PS3 on the supposed strength of blue ray. The drives read speed is slow which would hamper load times, especially if anyone was actually making use of all that storage... and if they were using it all, wouldn't the ram available to the ps3 have some limiting affect on the playing experience? So, a) you have a massive game with the graphical/audio/whatever spec you might expect from a game on any console, or b)the game looks/sounds/whatevers amazing but load times are massive, areas are small and the developer hasn't bothered to compress any of the data on the disk because they didn't have to.
Also, it's not an argument to say the PS3 is a cheap blue ray player. People try to argue this all the time but miss one vital point: the PS3 is NOT cheap!!

I think it's all fine and well to go on about 3 core processors and cores running in parallel and dual hardware threads or asymmetric SPEs and so on and so on.. but in truth, does anyone actually know the relevance of any of it? Is anyone here actually qualified to say it and know that what they're saying is a valid point? What relevance do sweeping statements about the specifics of hardware and how it functions have in any form of discussion when they are just direct quotes of other peoples points of view?

I think most people here are probably only really qualified to judge a console by their experience in playing it (I know this is certainly the case for me!). At the end of the day, a console is only good if it offers you games you like with a price tag you can afford and a controller which doesn't make you feel arthritic. The 360 fits all categories for me even though the hardware isn't the most silent or reliable (I'm on my first replacement, my friend is on his second) but there are bound to be people who feel similarly for the PS3.

Anyway, so few publishers have so much control now that it doesn't really matter what console you chose since most games will be brought out on multiple platforms with sequel upon sequel until the brand is well and truely dead. The "console war" is pointless if it makes no odds to the games we're playing on them. I think this is a bigger concern than trying to decide which console is best.

Norm.

Well i bought a PS3 yesterday with "Assassin's Creed", and it's looks pretty outstanding to me.

Looking forward to Resident Evil 5. Metal Gear Solid 4, and of course Grand Theft Auto 4.
